cafe and postres

We rode the free shuttle back to the hotel.

Kris & Liz got all caught up on high school gossip

Sunday morning we ate Mother's Day Brunch at Rioja.

St. Germain cocktail complete with house-made grapefruit bitters and grapefruit gelee. Deee-lish!

and then it was time to go back to the airport. Now I'm verklempt, so talk amongst yourselves. Topic: Mother's Day getaway 2010. We're thinking a warm beach in a nation knee-deep in avocados.

Oh yeah, we also went to the Hammond Candy Factory to buy peppermint pillows, elected not to attend the Chocolate extravaganza, but did see Baby Mama. Fun!

Now go wish Sinda a belated Happy Birthday!

getaway, part one

We stayed at the Magnolia Hotel. We shopped in Boulder at Boulder Bookstore and Prana, where Kris flirted with a girl from Tyler, Texas. We ate at Centro and had a really bad server named Ashlee.

nipples!

Suddenly a stranger appeared. Poking her head out of the bathroom stall she appeared startled to see a photo session taking place.

We rested, and we read.

Did you know blogger will only let you use up to 200 characters worth of labels? annoying.

I'll be away this long weekend, in Downtown Denver with the 2 best friends a girl could have. Sinda & Kris are flying in tonight so we can recreate our lost weekend 3! years ago, this time without IKEA, but with the Prana Store in Boulder. Also, this time we can ALL drink, because no one has a bun in the oven. That we know of.
Loopy, I'll do my best, but you know how she is.

Try not to be too jealous, ya'll.

Lemon Meringue! Suck it, all you lemon-haters.

Kris, yes I know. I had to omit some pies, otherwise there would have been way too many choices.
I left off Shoofly pie, which is also yummy, and oh so very suthren. Anyway, you have a blog. Make your own damn poll. It's fun!

Day 30

Well, BloMe down and call me Shorty! The last of November has finally arrived.

I will leave you with this Russell Edson poem, introduced to me by Ayun Halliday in the latest installment of The East Village Inky. Am I the only one who reads the Inky so excrutiatingly slowly that I can make it last for about 6 weeks? I hide it from myself, and then, suddenly discovering it under a pile of junk mail, I am elated all over again. Anyway, on to the poem, which I am posting for Kris. She knows why.

WITH SINCEREST REGRETS
for Charles Simic

Like a monstrous snail, a toilet slides into a living room on a track of wet, demanding to be loved.

It is impossible, and we tender our sincerest regrets. In the book of the heart there is no mention made of plumbing.

And though we have spent our intimacy many times with you, you belong to an unfortunate reference, which we would rather not embrace...

The toilet slides away...

Junebug is gonna love this place!

Multimedia message, originally uploaded by barlyru.

Everywhere we go, we keep seeing these little cottontails. Kris says we will come to hate them due to the garden-destroying tendencies, but I get so excited upon spying one that I swear I start feeling like a Disney princess with bluebirds circling my head.

So, on Saturday, we saw THE HOUSE (in Loveland), which wasn't as perfect in person as it was online. I was reminded of that Spalding Gray monologue "Terrors of Pleasure" where he buys a house. He carries around a Polaroid picture of the house and confuses the picture for the house itself. He's in love with the picture, not the house, which is a wreck. He says, "How can this house cause me any problems? Why, I can hold it in the palm of my hand!"

But I digress. Today, while Mr. Man is at work, I will go look at some more houses, this time in Longmont. Longmont is much closer to where he will work, which is nice. And it is not far from Boulder, or Denver. We drove through part of the town yesterday and it looked nice. It is a larger town than Loveland, and closer to the mountains.

Yesterday afternoon we drove to Fort Collins, which Ked says is "stupid" but which we found to be quite charming. How can you not love a town with a giant, gorgeous city park built around a lake with a huge playscape & a little train for the kids (like Zilker park but more beautiful) AND a waxing salon called "The Screaming Peach"? We wish we could live there, but it is a little too far for the man to drive everyday. In FoCo we also saw a Flea Market called "Itchy's". And in Loveland we drove by "Papa Wheelies" which is a motorcycle repair shop, and "Wonderful Dragon" Chinese food.

Have I mentioned how friendly the people are here? I always thought Texans were a friendly lot, but we have nothing on these people. And they love to talk about Austin. Of course, with Boulder nearby, they think they invented weird. The concierge at our hotel actually said "Austin is so Boulder!", using Boulder as an adjective.

One last thing before I go. I've been curious about local prices for items we buy all the time, like milk & eggs and such. Well, yesterday while we were in Fort Collins, we went to Whole Foods to scope out the prices. We were thrilled to find them to be exactly the same as Austin for things like organic milk, whole wheat pasta, eggs, etc. And the most exciting surprise of all? El Milagro tortilla chips!

Glory, Hallelujah!

Go wish Krispy a Happy Birthday

She is sometimes found here.

Seen above with the buxom & fetching Sinda during our famous Mother's Day Trip in aught 5, when she was beautifully preggers. It is still my favorite photo of her.

Have a great day, Kris, despite all the slipping in pee & rain-drenched swimming lessons.

xoxo!
